Frankie was hopping out of the shower before bed when she heard a knock at the door. She pulled on a robe and twisted her hair into a towel when a swift second knock rattled her nerves.

“Hold your horses. I’m coming!” She yanked open the door, ready to do battle with whoever was on the other side. Her first glimpse of the unexpected visitor made her clutch the lapels of her robe together to prevent herself from spilling out of it.

“Sorry,” Officer Willey mumbled. He was standing under her front awning dressed in plain clothes, wearing a Wilson Phillips concert t-shirt and dad jeans. His eyes skirted around uncomfortably, looking for a safe place to land, drifting to the robe and down to her legs. Under his scrutiny, Frankie felt a rush of heat move from her core to her limbs.

“Dude, my eyes are up here,” she joked, poking two fingers up to her eyes, clearly enjoying his discomfort.

The tips of his ears pinked up, and he winced while his eyes darted away to perceived safety. “I should have called first.”

“No, you should have held on for one more day,” she quipped, rendering him speechless in confusion, but then she pointed at his shirt. He looked down and grinned back up at her, and it felt like stepping into the sun.

“Oh, yeah. I forgot I was wearing this shirt.” He shrugged. “Can’t help it. I have a soft spot for early nineties girl bands. You know, The Bangles, Wilson Phillips, TLC, and Salt-n-Pepa.”

“Who doesn’t?” Frankie grinned, happy to have an ally. Harry was the only bright spot in this horrific reality she was living. “Did you want to come in?” Frankie asked, jerking her head into the living room while holding her robe closed with both hands.

“I need to borrow your car,” he blurted.

“What? Why?”

“I might have crossed a line,” he admitted. Harry was wringing his hands together, clearly conflicted. Then he lowered his voice and muttered, “I put a tracker on Ludlow’s car, hoping he’ll lead us to a break in Katie’s case.”

“Isn’t that illegal?” Frankie was taken aback. “Not that I have a problem with doing whatever it takes to bring Katie home safe.”

He grimaced. “Well, technically, it’s tracking without consent, a simple misdemeanor,” he answered sheepishly. “But Ludlow was jumpy after Katie’s parents and her grandmother came to the station yesterday. I overheard him make a couple of quick calls, and then he left for several hours. Now, I don’t want to get your hopes up, because it could be a huge waste of time, but the investigation is stalling out. At the very least, this will put my suspicions about him to bed.” He held out his hand. “So, can I borrow your car? I’d take mine, but when you drive a fully restored, cherry-red El Camino, it’s hard to stay under the radar.”

“Only if I can come with you,” Frankie decided.

“No way.”

“It’s not up for discussion,” Frankie countered, and seeing the firm set of her jaw, he gave in.
